In order to become a Green Advantage® Certified Practitioner, individuals must demonstrate foundational knowledge, comprehension, application and ability to analyze green construction concepts, materials, and practices by passing a Green Advantage® exam with a score of 75% or higher.  Particular emphasis is given to understanding the role of construction personnel in improving the environmental and health attributes of the built environment.

Certification is based on an established set of standards, and is overseen and judged by a group of experts who make up the Green Advantage® Certification Board.  Green Advantage® offers three types of construction certification exams – commercial, residential, and commercial/residential.

The Certification Exam Fee is $175. If you sign up for a prep training for Green Advantage® exams, you should confirm that the group training offers the exam to trainees at completion of the training OR, if you wish to schedule an individual exam at a testing center within the Green Advantage network, go to Register for Exam.  If you choose to take the Exam at a testing center outside the Green Advantage testing network, a proctoring fee will likely be charged by the testing center; average $35. This fee is collected from you by the testing center. The GA Open Book Exam Reference (OBER), which is updated quarterly, will be provided at no additional charge to all of those candidates registering and paying to take one of the GA exams.  If you do not take the exam within 90 days of registering, you should request an updated OBER.  Contact exams@greenadvantage.org to request an updated Open Book Exam Reference.  Learn more about the Green Advantage open book exam policy.

The Green Advantage® Certification Exam covers:

  • sustainability and green building
  • materials
  • indoor environmental quality
  • water
  • site and land use
  • energy

In order to prepare for one of the Green Advantage® exams, candidates should take the time to thoroughly review the Green Advantage® Open Book Exam Reference and the accompanying Exam Preparation Manual.  Although Green Advantage does not provide, authorize or endorse training, it is recommended that candidates take preparatory training from an academic or professional organization.
