Shannan Garretson is the Reserve Command Master Chief for the U.S. Coast Guard’s 13 th District, serving the Pacific Northwest, and also a Senior Environmental Specialist with the Iowa Department of Public Defense, working with the Iowa Army National Guard. Shannan has served with the U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years, on several large scale response operations, including the Deepwater Horizon disaster, Hurricane Maria, and at the Southwest Border assisting the U.S. Border Patrol in 2019.
Shannan’s work with the Iowa Army National Guard includes National Environmental Policy Act documentation and Environmental Condition of Property assessments for construction of new National Guard facilities. Prior to working for the Iowa Army National Guard, Shannan worked with Underground Storage Tanks/Leaking Underground Storage Tanks (UST/LUST) through tank removal, soil and ground water sampling, and contaminant transport analysis and monitoring.
Her education includes a Bachelors in Environmental Science from the University of Iowa, and a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University. She also holds a Resilience Building Leadership Program – Trainer Certification. Shannan is married, with two daughters.
